When should eye exams be scheduled?
Official recommendations were set by the American Optometric Association (AOA), as follows:
Adults who wear eyeglasses or contact lenses should have an annual eye exam. If no corrective lenses are needed, then an eye exam can be scheduled every two to three years until age 40. After 40 years old it is advised to go more frequently, as the incidence of many common eye diseases, such as presbyopia and macular degeneration, is increased. Any adult with health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure or other disorders, may need extra eye examinations – as per the doctor’s instruction.
Children should first have their eyes examined as early as 6 months old, to check for normal visual development. After this, the next evaluation is done at 3 years of age, followed by an additional exam before the child begins school. If no problems are detected, then annual eye exams are recommended for all school-aged children. When vision difficulties or conditions are diagnosed, it may be necessary to go for follow-up eye examinations more regularly than once a year.
Why are regular eye exams important?
With aging, many eye disorders and diseases become more common. Early detection of these problems can have a strong impact on maintaining your eye health and visual clarity. Routine eye exams allow for diagnosis of disease when the symptoms are still minimal and treatment can begin as soon as possible.
Children do most of their learning through the visual presentation of information. Therefore, if a vision problem goes undetected, your child’s cognitive development may be compromised or delayed. Common ocular conditions in children include typical nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, weak eye teaming and coordination, and there are effective treatments for all of these problems. Eye exams can, therefore, prevent many learning problems in the classroom.
